The Face of a Monster

Far from the stable environment Cathy Terkanian envisioned, the Bowman household was controlled by a violent sexual predator. As illustrated by the timeline below, Dennis Bowman’s criminal history was extensive and escalating, yet he was allowed to maintain custody of his adoptive daughter.

  • Dismissal of Sexual Abuse Outcries: As Aundria entered her teenage years, she became the target of Dennis's sexual abuse. Aundria explicitly confided in Brenda about the molestation. Brenda chose to protect her husband, explicitly telling the 14-year-old, "You know that's a lie," gaslighting the child and dismissing the abuse.

  • Undermining School Intervention: Aundria expressed intense fear of going home to high school staff. When the school contacted the Bowmans, Brenda aggressively defended Dennis. She framed Aundria as a rebellious, disobedient "problem child" who was lying to avoid doing chores, effectively shutting down outside intervention.

  • Accepting the "Runaway" Cover Story: Following Aundria's disappearance, Brenda unquestioningly accepted Dennis's story that the teenager had stolen money and run away, despite knowing Aundria had recently threatened to report Dennis to the police. Brenda did not organize searches, make public pleas, or advocate for her missing daughter, instead choosing to live quietly alongside her husband for over 30 years.

Brenda's Failure to Act

A critical and deeply disturbing element of Aundria's life was the absolute failure of her adoptive mother, Brenda Bowman, to protect her. Brenda's actions (and inactions) constituted severe negligence and active victim-blaming.
